Internet llega a su límite en EE.UU. y se agotará en el verano de 2015

A EE.UU. le quedan tan solo unas 3,4 millones de direcciones electrónicas libres del protocolo IPv4, que es usado por la mayoría de los sitios web en el país. Según los cálculos, esta cantidad se agotará el próximo verano.

En los años 80, cuando se creó el primer protocolo de Internet, el IPv4, se estableció una capacidad máxima de unos 4.300 millones de direcciones IP. Para entonces parecía una cantidad enorme, pero el desarrollo de la tecnología y el aumento de los dispositivos de todo tipo hizo que en EE.UU. quedaran solamente unas 3,4 millones de direcciones electrónicas libres, que se agotarán aproximadamente durante el verano de 2015, según ‘The Wall Street Journal’.

A partir de ese momento, las empresas y personas tendrán que usar la versión actualizada del protocolo, el IPv6, que exige invertir en un nuevo y costoso ‘hardware’. Cabe destacar que mientras en EE.UU. y Canadá la mayoría de los sitios continúan en IPv4, otras regiones como Asia y Europa (cuyas cuotas para los protocolos IPv4 se acabaron hace unos años) ya movieron todos sus dominios hacia el nuevo protocolo.

Por su parte, el IPv6, compuesto por 128 bits (a diferencia de los 32 bits de las IPv4) en teoría permite que cada persona del planeta pueda disponer de millones de direcciones IP. De ese modo, las direcciones no se agotarían nunca, pero vale la pena recordar que en los años 80 se pensaba exactamente igual.
